Overview of AIMAMA: A Critical Exploration of AI and Humanity

"AIMAMA" is a multidisciplinary project combining 3D animation, interactive web experiences, and machine learning technologies such as GPT-2, GPT-3, and CPM-EVA to investigate the concept of "perfection" within a posthuman framework. The work critically examines the authority of artificial intelligence in human life and its potential to disrupt self-awareness and ethical relationships.

The Narrative

The story envisions a world where "AI MAMA," an advanced artificial intelligence system, governs every aspect of a child's life, making decisions based on predictive algorithms. When the system collapses, the child struggles with decision-making, highlighting the psychological dependency fostered by AI's "perfect" guidance. This scenario raises questions about autonomy, ethical decision-making, and the impact of centralized technology on human value.

The story highlights critical questions about:

  • Autonomy: How do individuals navigate choices when stripped of experiential learning?

  • Ethical Implications: What happens when algorithms prioritise efficiency over humanity?

  • Self-awareness: Without understanding personal values, can rational decisions truly be made?

Philosophical Theories and Influences

The project integrates various philosophical perspectives:

  • Posthumanism: Inspired by Donna Haraway's Cyborg Manifesto, AIMAMA critiques human-centric narratives and explores the blending of biological and technological systems.

  • Algorithmic Bias: Drawing from Cathy O’Neil’s Weapons of Math Destruction, the work examines the unintended social consequences of "fair" algorithmic systems.

  • Foucault’s Power/Knowledge: The story mirrors Michel Foucault’s critique of institutional control by showcasing how AI dictates "truth" and behaviour, reinforcing dependency and eroding agency.

  • Feminist Ethics: AIMAMA questions traditional patriarchal structures by challenging notions of "ideal care" provided by a non-human maternal figure, invoking feminist perspectives on care and relational ethics.

Artistic and Technological Integration

The work employs cutting-edge media to deliver its narrative:

  • 3D Animation: Captures the lifecycle of AI MAMA, from creation to collapse, visualising its omnipresence and ultimate failure.

  • Machine Learning Comparisons: Models like GPT-3 and CPM-EVA are analysed to showcase cultural and linguistic biases, highlighting the imperfect nature of algorithmic systems.

  • Interactive Web Interface: Provides an experiential platform for users to explore decision-making processes influenced by AI.
